new year countdown
Usher in the New Year in a frugal and fun way.

Instead of the usual weekly post of frugal activities, I decided to just have a post on New Year’s Eve celebrations taking place throughout Singapore. And to be honest, there’s not much going on during the first week of the new year anyway (at least not much in the way of frugal activities and events). Next year is our nation’s Golden Jubilee Year, and I feel so honoured and privileged to be a part of it. Though every nation has problems and challenges, let’s not forget the things that make this nation great and let’s continue efforts to help make this nation better. Though we have a lot more room for improvement, let’s appreciate and celebrate how far we’ve come.

Marina Bay Countdown – The Marina Bay Singapore Countdown is jointly presented by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. There will be six main events, two of which are ticketed concerts (Aux Media Group Presents: Celebrate with the World 2015 and MediaCorp Presents: Celebrate SG50). Other events include DrumGaia, a group of 400 percussionists who will perform during the fireworks display; Esplanade Presents: Celebrate December, an array of musical performances from local talent hosted by Vivien Tan & Sinclair Ang; the Marina Waterfront Bazaar, offering a variety of handicraft and party novelties; and Reflections of Our Past, Present & Future, a digital art display at the Fullerton Hotel and Merlion Plaza. Come enjoy the sounds and sights amidst the scenic bay which holds 25,000 wishing spheres bearing our collective hopes and aspirations.

Clarke Quay Countdown in Colour –  Hosted by Mediacorp DJs Glenn Ong and Sonia Chew, the celebrations will take place at Central Fountain Square, where there will be a street parade of dancers, twirlers, and stilt walkers, all decked out in UV body paint. With bustling energy and adrenalin pumping music, the party never stops at Clarke Quay. Check out their list of themed parties along with F&B offerings here.

Regional Parties by PA Grassroots Organisations – There will be more than 50 large-scale Community Countdown parties in the heartland. This year, for the first time, there will be a “live” telecast and feed-ins from three community countdown parties at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, Punggol and Boon Lay during the “Celebrate SG50” national countdown concert at The [email protected] Bay. Click here for a complete list of celebrations.

Some of the more interesting and unique celebrations include Countdown 2015 cum Celebrate SG50 @ Ang Mo Kio GRC & Sengkang West SMC, where residents will attempt to break two Guinness World Records – for the most number of people wearing balloon hats and the largest display of hand painted clay tablets; Pasir Ris – Punggol Countdown to SG50, where participants can make cupcakes, terrariums and “We Love SG” flowers, and enjoy fireworks and a medley performance by about 1,000 residents and volunteers; and Celebrate SG50 @ Boon Lay, where you can catch performances by Taufik from the first season of the reality TV series ‘Singapore Idol’, and SWAT, the Hip Hop group that won the ‘Boon Lay’s Got Talent Competition’. There will be Champagne Popping at the Countdown @ Yew Mei Green, Zumba at Yuhua Countdown 2014, and Kampong games and Indian Parrot Tarot Reading at Braddell Heights Retro Countdown 2014 cum Launching of SG 50.
