Comparison of Foodpanda vs Deliveroo vs UberEATS – plus a $10 promo code for FREE food

ubereats
Uber now delivers more than just passengers.

For several years, Foodpanda had somewhat of a monopoly in the food delivery service sector in Singapore. Now, it has to compete with Deliveroo (which came on board late last year) and with UberEATS, the new kid on the block, which started a few months ago. These 3 food delivery services make it so that we can save time and perhaps even some money (when we use offer codes and coupons such as the one below) without queuing or traveling long distances in the rain, all while satisfying our food cravings at home or in the office. There are several notable differences among the 3 service providers, even though they perform essentially the same task. I’ve summarised their differences in the graph below: (more…)

Thoughtful & Frugal Gifts Ideas for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and for those procrastinators who have not gotten a gift yet (myself included), here are some gift ideas that are thoughtful yet frugal. Most dads, as I’ve been told, don’t really want ties and money clips. Instead, they secretly want gadgets. However, gadgets can be very expensive, and too many of them are bad for the planet as they contribute to the excessive amounts of ewaste. A lot of gadgets also end up underused and collecting dust on the shelf (the average drill is used only 12 minutes before it’s discarded) as technology evolves and new gadgets replace the old ones. Because of budget and ewaste considerations, my list includes primarily experiential gifts, along with some tech gadgets, all reasonably priced! (more…)

Factors to Consider and the #1 Question to Ask Before you Refinance Your Loan

Refinancing is all about costs versus benefits.

For the first time in decades, the SIBOR rates (these affect your mortgage loans) rose significantly higher than LIBOR rates. This implies that interest rates in Singapore can go up as a result of factors other than what the US Fed does. SIBOR stands for Singapore Interbank Offered Rate. It is a daily reference rate based on the interbank interest rates at which banks lend to one another.  At 1.06% (3-month April SIBOR), this key benchmark rate is 2.5 times higher than the 0.4% in 2014.

As mortgage loans are based on SIBOR, many people are wondering if it’s time to refinance to seek a lower (teaser) interest rate. But you don’t get something for nothing (at least not typically in the finance industry). So you need to consider the costs versus the benefits. Lenders, loan officers, and bank advertisements will entice you with interest rates, but what they never advertise is all the fees and restrictions. Here’s a countdown of some things to consider before happily handing over your signed loan documents to an eager loan officer. (more…)

How to Save on Your Groceries at NTUC, Giant, Sheng Siong & Cold Storage

With self checkout, memberships, credit cards, and senior discounts, how much can you save on groceries?

As a former “extreme couponer”, I’ve had to find other ways to offset my grocery bills ever since I moved to Singapore. Surprisingly, there are many tricks and strategies to accomplish this. The savings you get aren’t as “extreme” as using multiple stackable coupons (like in the US), but these strategies are far less time intensive than clipping, sorting, and organising little pieces of paper. And with the slow-growing economy and wages, every little bit counts! Here are some ways to offset your grocery expenses at the various supermarkets in Singapore: (more…)

Thoughtful & Frugal Gifts Ideas for Christmas

Where to get cheap gifts without appearing to be cheap.

There are times when buying second-hand is not really an option; office or holiday gift exchanges are one of them. Here are my top picks for frugal gifts, all around $25. I’ve chosen these based on their thoughtfulness, utility, and value. As a gift giver, I don’t want to appear “cheap”. But I also don’t want to give something that is useless and creates more “stuff” in this world. Many of these are gifts that I’ve personally given to others, including in-laws and office colleagues. Today is also a good day to do some online shopping as many shops have a massive 12-12 Sale. (more…)

Need a Home Service? Get Providers to Bid for Your Business

page advisor
The “Uber” of on-demand services.

Until recently, the burden of finding a home service provider, whether it’s a handyman, car repair technician, computer repair technician, mover, babysitter, personal trainer, or private chef, had long been placed on those requesting the service. Not so anymore! Nowadays, if you need a home-based service, instead of Googling or searching through Gumtree or Craigslist ads, you can place a job request through a new app called Page Advisor and service providers will come to you. Page Advisor, which just launched a couple of months ago, has already earned a reputation as “an Uber for on-demand services.” (more…)
