Most of my life was spent in California. There, it’s illegal to smoke in bars, restaurants, and in your own vehicle (if children are present). In some cities, such as San Rafael, you can’t even smoke in your own home. Thus, with these strict laws, the smoking rate drastically decreased. But in Singapore, smoking is allowed in most outdoor public places. According to the Health Promotion Board (HPB), the number of smokers has increased over the recent years to about 1 in 6 adults. The cost to society in terms of healthcare, hospitalisation, productivity loss, and early death is large. But we should also consider the cost to the individual. (more…)
