Have you ever lost or forgotten your MRT card on a train or bus? If you have, you’ll find that it’s not easy to recover it, unless it’s also a bank card or PAssion card, which has identifying information. While you can report a “lost item” with SMRT, SBS, and Tower Transit, I personally have never recovered anything from doing so. But now with this free service, you can insure your MRT card and even recover the unused value. Here’s how.

EZ-Link’s Card Blocking Service

Card Blocking is a free service by EZ-Link, which has partnered with FWD Insurance. Once you register your card, you can activate the Card Blocking feature. This means that if you lose your card, you can block others from using it, recover the remaining value of the card, and even file a claim against unauthorised usage.

Claims are made through FWD Insurance, and are covered for up to $15 per year.

Once you register and activate this feature, you will be sent an email from FWD Insurance with your policy number and date of activation. This plan is completely free, and there’s no expiry date.

Here’s a cool video explaining how it works:

Why You Should Download the EZ-Link App

While you can register for this service by desktop, I find that it’s more convenient to download their app. Plus, their app has lots of other features that you might find very useful. These include checking the balance of your card, checking your transaction history for up to 3 months, and earning rewards.

Yes, you get reward points for public transport rides, retail/vending purchases, and ERP and carpark payments. These points can be used to redeem discounts or free products.

You earn 1 point for every $0.10 spent using your EZ-Link card. So for those who spend $80 a month, you get 800 points.

Here are some current offers you can redeem with those points. Since I started using it, I’ve made 3 redemptions. Please note you don’t have to use the reward at the time of redemtpion; you can save it (as a “voucher”) for later.

If you link your EZ-link card to a Plus! account, you also get Plus! LinkPoints which you can use to offset your NTUC Fairprice purchases.

All these services, freebies, and rewards, just for doing what you already do! But you have to register and activate your card, otherwise you won’t benefit from it.

And in case you’re wondering, one of the rewards I redeemed was a free pasta at Pastamania. The redemption (at the Cathay Cineleisure outlet) was quick and easy too!
