Pedestrians get the right of way this Saturday on Orchard Road.

Feeling creative? Want to give someone a really impressive, one-of-a-kind, personal gift for Christmas? Why not head down to the Singapore Maker Festival this week. Other frugal events for the week include open houses at the Singapore Turf Club and at Starbucks outlets. You can also plan an evening stroll along Orchard Road and not have to worry about traffic lights. Here are some frugal events for the week:

Wednesday 3 Dec

  • Singapore Makers Festival, various times from 1 Dec to 14 Dec – The Singapore Maker Festival 2014 is an inaugural umbrella event celebrating the Maker movement in Singapore. There will be workshops to advocate hands-on learning and promote ‘do-it-yourself’ activities, and displays to celebrate local talent and inventiveness. Kids can take part in workshops and camps to learn about robotic design and racing, print 3D models, and make toys and crafts for Christmas. (venues: week 1 at the National Design Centre (1-7 Dec) and week 2 at the ArtScience Museum (8-14 Dec))

Thursday 4 Dec

  • Starbucks Christmas Open House, 5 – 7pm – As part of their 12 days of gifting, Starbucks will be giving out a tall-sized Christmas beverage if you make a donation to the Salvation Army at their stores during this time. Christmas beverages include Toffee Nut Latte, Cranberry White Chocolate Mocha, Peppermint Mocha, and Christmas Cookie Latte. • Turf Club Fun Under the Stars Open House, 5 – 9pm – The Singapore Racecourse in Kranji will once again open its gates to the public for an eventful night of live performances, pony rides (at $20 per ride), engaging games and activities. There will be a bouncy castle, colouring contest, balloon sculpting, and face painting. Visitors can also join a guided tour of the Club’s world-class race track for $5 per person – a privilege not available to the public on other days. All proceeds from the pony rides and track tours will be donated to the Thye Hua Kwan EIPIC Centre in Woodlands (venue: 1 Turf Club Ave – near horse walk area)

Friday 5 Dec

  • Singapore Customs Liquor Auction, 11:30am – 12.45pm (viewing) 1pm (auction)  – Since I grew up with an alcoholic brother, I myself am a non-drinker, but I do understand and appreciate why many people, even frugal folks, celebrate important events and holidays with liquor and alcohol. Part of me wishes that I too can enjoy some holiday wine and spirits… But if it wasn’t for my childhood, it would be the huge alcohol tax in Singapore that would deter me from drinking. Well, here’s your chance of getting liquor without having to pay the tax. Singapore Customs periodically auctions off confiscated liquor. For this upcoming auction, there are over 1500 bottles. Some (such as the beers) you must buy in bulk while most others are in individual lots. (venue: 21 Keppel Road)

Saturday 6 Dec

  • Pedestrian Night on Orchard, 6.30 – 11pm – On the first Saturday evening of every month (until March 2015), Orchard Road is transformed into a pedestrian street, where there will be entertainment, performances, mass workouts, roving Christmas mascots, bouncy castles, and photo opportunities under the magical Christmas lights and decorations. (venue: Orchard Road between Scotts Road and Bideford Road)
  • Christmas Around the World, 12 – 6pm – SAFRA Toa Payoh will be hosting this free event, complete with games, sweet treats, FREE Zoomoov rides, and a lucky draw to win a 2-night staycation at Resorts World Genting. The event is open to the public but the lucky draw is only for SAFRA members. (venue: SAFRA Toa Payoh)

Sunday 7 Dec

  • Batman and Gotham City Cosplay Competition, 1 – 3pm – Come dressed as your favourite Batman & Gotham City character. Participation is free (must register by 3 Dec) and you can get a DC Comics goodie bag (worth $150) and a chance to win cash prizes (up to $1000). Or, if you’re like me, you can come watch.
