Get into the festive spirit with these free events.

With Singapore being a small country and having a reputation of being one of the most expensive countries to live in, I repeatedly hear people comment that “there’s just nothing new to do in Singapore” or “going out is too expensive”. So I’ve decided to start a weekly series that conveniently lists some interesting and frugal activities. Of course, there are way too many free events and activities in Singapore (especially at museums, parks, and libraries), some of which recur weekly or monthly, and I won’t be able to cover all of them. I tried to select the more interesting and unique events. Without further ado, here is this week’s list:

Wednesday 26 Nov

  • Kalaa Utsavan Indian Festival of Arts, various dates & times – In its 13th year, this festival has grown to encompass a wide range of programmes showcasing both internationally acclaimed and up-coming artists from India, as well as works by local artists. See their website for a complete programme schedule, including free events. (venue: The Esplanade, 1 Esplanade Dr)

Friday 28 Nov

  • Christmas by the River Lights & Fireworks Festival, 7.30 – 9pm – In its 2nd year, Christmas by the River will have a spectacular display of fireworks (in front of Clarke Quay Central at 9pm), while the banks of Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Robertson Quay are all decked out with 8m-tall lit Christmas trees. There will be roving mascots and a choir singing Christmas carols starting at 7:30pm. This event will also take place on 12 Dec and 26 Dec. (venue: Clarke Quay Central, 6 Eu Tong Sen St)
  • Black Friday – This is the day after Thanksgiving (in the US) in which retailers give steep discounts to spur on the Christmas season shopping. Online retailers will often extend their sales to Monday (a.k.a. Cyber Monday). If there’s something that you need anyway, why not see if Amazon or another retailer is giving steep discounts? Just be careful about those unplanned purchases which can really add up.Black-Friday-Quotes-1
